Children's Ministries

Welcome to the First Presbyterian Church Franklin Children’s Ministry.  Our congregation takes seriously the promises we make at the baptism of a child.  We offer ways to guide and nurture the faith of children to help set them on a life-long journey of being a disciple of Christ.

Our ministries are designed for newborns through 6th graders with a variety of opportunities including Sunday School, Confirmation, Children’s Worship, Nursery, Vacation Bible School and many other events for children and families throughout the year.

We invite you to come experience these vibrant ministries for your children and enjoy the connections your family will find to God and to other families at FPC.

All are welcome!

Kim Joiner,

Director of Christian Education

A nursery for infants through 3 year olds is available in rooms 111 and 112 (first floor, preschool entrance).  We have a dedicated staff of nursery attendants along with volunteer assistants to provide a loving and safe environment.  Pagers are available when needed, but your cell number is appreciated (just keep on vibrate!)  We encourage children of all ages to participate in worship.  If your child is unhappy or needs a break from the worship service, we encourage you to utilize the Adult Library or Narthex where you can continue to worship using the sanctuary audio heard in both areas.  The nursery is available during all our services, Sunday school, and special events.  Ushers are available if you need assistance.

All the children (pre-K through 5th grade) will gather at 9:45 in the Music Room (215 B) for a Gathering Time of music and opening worship where the Bible story will be introduced.

Children's Worship

Children are welcome to remain in the sanctuary for the entire worship service, or children 4, 5 and in kindergarten may choose to attend Children's Worship at the conclusion of the Time with the Young Church.

Children ages 4 through kindergarten are given the opportunity to worship through the Children's Worship program. Children's Worship offers a way of learning that challenges our children to experience the Bible through storytelling, using a hands-on approach.  The stories of God come to life using figures made of wood and other materials.  The goal of this curriculum is not only to teach a story, but also to engage children in the act of worship.  Trained leaders from our congregation direct the sessions each week through great stories of the church year.

During Aug. - May CW is offered for both the 8:30 and the 11:00 worship services. The leaders will meet the children in the narthex and take them to room 210.  A leader will bring the kindergarten children back to the sanctuary after their Bible story where they will rejoin their family for the remainder of the service.  The 4- and 5-year-olds should be picked up at the conclusion of the service.

Our preschool is part-day (9:00-1:00) with after-care available to 2:55.  Preschool is in session from mid-August to mid-May and loosely follows the Williamson County Schools schedule.  We enroll children ages 2 – 5 and provide 2, 3, or 4 day classes.

Confirmation Sunday School Class

Preteens at First Presbyterian Church enroll in confirmation when they reach the 6th grade.  The program is open to older students as well.  The course, which begins in September, starts with an understanding of scripture and includes information about the Reformed tradition, the Presbyterian Church (USA) and First Presbyterian Church of Franklin.  In addition to Confirmands attending Sunday morning classes, each is assigned a Covenant Partner who walks beside them in their journey.  Confirmands and Covenant Partners read the Gospel of Luke and meet at least monthly to discuss their reading and explore other questions of the faith.

Sunday Night Summit (SNS)

The Sunday Night Summit is the happening place to be on Sunday nights from Sept. to May. We offer age-specific programs for 3rd – 12th grade students from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. A dinner meal is provided each evening that children, pre-teens or youth gather at the Summit. Table fellowship offers us all a chance to get to know one another better and share our personal highs and lows. At our Summit we pray together, break bread together and enjoy table fellowship at a low cost to participants.

Sunday Night Summit sample schedule:

5:30 pm—6:30 Quest—(3rd – 6th graders meet with grade level leaders)

6:30 pm Dinner in Wilson Hall (tables are labeled for each grade to sit with their leaders)

7:00 pm—Parents pick up students

  • path 34

We are going down PATH 34 with all our 3rd and 4th graders on two Sunday Night Summits during the months of Sept to May. We offer them an opportunity to explore their faith, and learn about their world of relationships with friends and family. We have guided table fellowship, team-building games, fun activities, service projects and Quest curriculum—all designed for this age group. The curriculum is “Skills for Growing.” That is just what we hope to do: give our 3rd and 4th grade students positive skills to help them grow into their tween and adolescence years. This curriculum reinforces the core values you are teaching at home: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness and caring. PATH 34 is designed to teach these core values and instill the Golden Rule Jesus asks us to follow: “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you (Matthew 7:12).

  • TREK 56

The pre-teens of 5th and 6th grades are on an exciting TREK. Sometimes their trail is rocky and uncertain. They are often on a high mountaintop and then zoom into the valley. TREK 56 is designed to help them explore this uncertain terrain between childhood and adolescence. We offer programs to help them explore their faith and life in relation to their peers and family on this Christian journey. TREK 56 at the Summit will also meet approximately twice each month. They join the larger community for table fellowship then break into smaller groups for age-specific lessons. We use “Skills for Adolescence” curriculum from the Lions-Quest series. Those same core values from PATH 34 will be reinforced with more focus on entering the teen years, building self-confidence and communication skills, managing emotions in positive ways and improving peer and family relationships.
